Boxing, Art and positive mental health
The RFYB Positive Mental Health Program is designed to support young people aged 8 to 18 in the Revolution Fitness Youth Program and addresses the youth mental health crisis by utilizing the arts to meet their social and emotional needs in combination with physical activity and learning healthy coping strategies. The program focuses on building skills that promote resilience and healthy coping strategies to help young people navigate their daily lives and the inevitable challenges they will face. It provides a safe and supportive environment to explore and express their emotions through the arts, while also learning coping skills and strategies for managing their emotions and promoting positive mental health.

what is positive mental health education?
The program aims to educate young people about the importance of mental health and teach strategies for improving their mental health through visual art expression, therapeutic art, mindfulness practices including yoga and guided drawing, journaling, public art projects, dance and other creative arts. By the end of the program, participants will have a better understanding of how they can improve their mental health, be able to identify signs of poor mental health in themselves and others, know how to respond to it, and be empowered to take action. They will know the community resources available to them and have a support system for dealing with mental health issues when they arise.
Current data indicates a need for additional mental health support in Stamford particularly among young people of color and low income households. There were over 300 reported suicide ideations and attempts among high school students according to information shared by school counselors at Westhill High School in Stamford. In addition the 2019 Youth Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System report shows 18.8% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide and 8.9% actually attempted suicide with the highest numbers reported by students who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
